LA HOME Magazine

THE CLIENT:
LA HOME Magazine showcased the work of the growing number of talented artisans, architects and designers in Los Angeles, CA. The magazine is meant to celebrate the people who create the things and spaces we inhabit.

A few years back I worked with LA HOME Magazine as one of their go-to photographers. Basically they would call me up and ask if I could come with them for the interview and take some editorial shots of the person and the place.

These types of shoots ended up being some of my favorites because I got to meet the most interesting people here in Los Angeles, see their home and/or studio space, hear about their creative endeavors, and photograph all of it.

SO MUCH FUN. And inspiring!!

Nancy Baker Cahill was one of the featured artists that allowed up to peek into her studio space. She had so many cool things around her - a wall covered in a large sketch that she was working on, a paper maché art installation, a desk covered in scraps of paper and neon colors. She seemed more comfortable sitting at her desk, working on some small art project, while we interviewed and took photos. It made for some interesting images since they were more focused on details and candids.

I even got to meet Robert Duncan, the composer behind a number of tv/film scores but most notably, my favorite television show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I found out he scored some of my favorite scenes!

His home was hidden away outside of Los Angeles and I remember following him down a corridor covered with movie posters. And then we entered this giant racquetball room filled with instruments and TV screens. It was so cool watching him move around between percussion to strings to piano. And he would just talk to us about his creative process. He’d watch the scene on the TV above and then record him playing a score. Right there! So fascinating!

I even had the ability to pitch the home of one of my good friends, Kristen Hall. She recently bought a small home and while renovating it she found some interesting pieces that dated back to the 1930’s. Taking in the charm of the original bones of the house and integrating her own style and taste throughout, it only seemed natural to want to share it with Mark at LA HOME Magazine.

We ended up getting a lot of incredible photos of her space (she has the best eye for interior design) and we even got a feature of the nearly century-old whiskey bottle that was stashed in the walls of her home.

Detail & interior design photos taken at Kristen Hall’s home.

In need of some great interior design shots or editorial shots? We can help!
